Faulkner Finalist Success: Poetry Collections
Faulkner finalist Ned Balbo wrote in to report some great news. Said Ned, “My talented wife, Jane Satterfield, received the Gold Medal in the Essay a few years back; we visited together & had a wonderful time. That same year, I was a finalist in both poetry and the essay.”
Since then, Ned has published a third book, The Trials of Edgar Poe and Other Poems (Story Line Press/WCU Poetry Center, Donald Justice Prize 2010), and a chapbook, Something Must Happen (Finishing Line Press, 2009).
The Trials of Edgar Poe and Other Poems contains two poems that reached the Words & Music finals in different years: an early version of “Hart Island” (2003), now developed into a longer sequence, and “The Yankee Clipper” (2007), in ottava rima.

In addition, the chapbook Something Must Happen includes “Snow in Baghdad,” which was a Words and Music finalist, too (2008). Here’s a link:

Ned Balbo added, “Thanks again for your support and encouragement through previous Words & Music competitions. I hope that planning for this year’s gathering is going smoothly and that the
celebration is another big success.”
Thanks, Ned — and continued success to you and Jane on your journey — thrilled to be part of your success story!
